Mariscal & de las Muelas: design, night and Barcelona character
November 2
6:30 PM
The series organized by The New Barcelona Post will bring together Javier Mariscal and Javier de las Muelas for a conversation about the creative Barcelona of the 1980s and 1990s, nightlife culture and the character that has defined the city, with an eye on its future too.
Barcelona has gone through several stages of transformation that have helped shape its personality. In the 1980s and 1990s, in the run-up to the Olympic Games and the years that followed, the city experienced a creative effervescence that connected design, gastronomy, leisure and a new way of understanding urban life. It was a Barcelona able to combine the avant-garde with tradition, the rigor of craftsmanship with improvisation, and international reach with an identity of its own, irreverent and open to the world.
Two figures who embody this way of understanding the city are Javier Mariscal, designer and creator of Cobi, the mascot of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, and Javier de las Muelas, entrepreneur and leading figure in mixology, linked to emblematic venues of Barcelona’s nightlife such as Gimlet and Dry Martini. Coming from different worlds, both have helped build an image of Barcelona in which design, culture, leisure and creativity are part of the same way of life.
This will be the common thread of the next Stellar Moments session, the series organized by The New Barcelona Post, which will feature a dialogue between the two Javiers, hosted by journalist Toni Aira. More than a conventional interview, the meeting aims to recapture the spirit of an era and explore what remains today of that Barcelona that knew how to turn creativity and hedonism into distinctive features of its identity.
