The Power of an Image Can Transform the Way We See the World
In this new edition of the World Press Photo 2025 exhibition in Barcelona, CASA SEAT welcomes Maria Abranches, winner of the award in the Photo Storytelling (Europe) category, to discuss her project MARIA—a work that gives voice to the often invisible stories of thousands of migrant women across Europe.
A documentary photographer and independent photojournalist, Abranches focuses her work on human rights, colonialism, racism, and gender inequality. Her photographic essay MARIA portrays the life of Ana María Jeremías, an Angolan woman who was a victim of human trafficking and sent to Portugal to work under servitude conditions. Through her story—and her resilience—Abranches pays tribute to all the “Marias” who, in silence, sustain other people’s households while demanding recognition of their own rights.
The conversation will be moderated by Tania Safura Adam Mogne, researcher, writer, and curator. Founder of the platform Radio África, Safura Adam’s work explores colonial memory, genealogies, and the forms of imagination and resistance within Black identity.

The event is held in collaboration with the Photographic Social Vision Foundation, organizer of the World Press Photo exhibition in Barcelona.
